Mitchell Starc Withdraws from IPL 2025, Major Setback for Delhi Capitals

Mitchell Starc - Delhi Capitals

In a significant blow to Delhi Capitals’ playoff hopes, Australian pace spearhead Mitchell Starc has officially withdrawn from the remainder of IPL 2025, choosing not to return to India. The veteran pacer, who had featured in the rain-abandoned clash in Dharamsala last week, has informed the franchise of his unavailability for the rest of the season, according to media reports.

Starc has been Delhi’s leading wicket-taker this season, with 14 wickets in 11 matches at an average of 26.14, playing a crucial role in the team’s strong mid-season push.

WTC Final in Focus

Starc’s withdrawal is reportedly aimed at ensuring uninterrupted preparation ahead of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, with Australia set to compete once again in the marquee Test event. The decision is in line with several Australian players prioritizing national duties as the IPL enters its final leg.

Fraser-McGurk Also Exits

Adding to Delhi’s troubles, Jake Fraser-McGurk has also opted out of the rest of the season. The explosive young batter, purchased for INR 9 crore at the mega auction, has been a dynamic presence in the top order but has decided not to return for the business end of the tournament.

Mustafizur Rahman Signed, But NOC Uncertain

As a replacement for Starc, Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman has been signed for INR 6 crore. However, his participation remains uncertain, as the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed they have not yet received a request for a No Objection Certificate (NOC). Mustafizur is currently in Sharjah, participating in a T20I series against the UAE.

Stubbs to Return Temporarily

On a slightly brighter note for DC, South African batter Tristan Stubbs has confirmed his return to the squad. However, he will be available only for the remainder of the league stage before departing for national commitments related to the WTC final.

Du Plessis and Other Aussies in Limbo

There is still no confirmation on whether Faf du Plessis will return to the Delhi Capitals camp.

Elsewhere in the IPL, Australian players are making varied decisions:

  • Pat Cummins and Travis Head will rejoin Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), who are already eliminated from playoff contention. Their campaign ends on May 25, giving both players time for WTC preparations.
  • Josh Hazlewood of RCB is monitoring a shoulder niggle before making his decision.
  • Josh Inglis is yet to confirm his availability with Punjab Kings (PBKS).
  • Mitchell Marsh is set to return to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) soon.

Delhi’s Playoff Push

The timing couldn’t be worse for Delhi Capitals, who currently sit fifth on the IPL 2025 points table, with 13 points from 11 matches (6 wins, 4 losses, 1 no-result). With the playoff race heating up, the absence of key international players could impact their momentum in the final stretch of the tournament.

Delhi Capitals IPL 2025 Status (After 11 Matches):

  • Position: 5th
  • Points: 13
  • Wins: 6
  • Losses: 4
  • NR: 1

As the franchise scrambles for replacements and clarity over foreign player availability, the next two weeks will be crucial for their playoff aspirations.
