Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary Indian cricketer and now an iconic commentator, is celebrated for his cricketing insights, sharp analysis, and a sense of humour that often surprises viewers. He is someone who doesn’t hesitate to speak his mind, making him one of the most respected voices in the game. Known for calling a spade a spade, Gavaskar is never shy about sharing bold opinions — be it about a player’s form, captaincy, or team dynamics. However, amidst his serious cricket talk, he also has a lighter, more humorous side, which was on full display during a recent IPL broadcast.

In a light-hearted moment that quickly turned into meme material, Gavaskar found himself revisiting an old viral meme featuring him and sports anchor Mayanti Langer. The meme originally became popular because the colour of Gavaskar’s trousers matched Mayanti’s dress. During an IPL discussion this season, the humorous spark returned when Gavaskar, seated next to Mayanti and Robin Uthappa on the panel, joked, “I just want to ask, Robin, why is he wearing Mayanti’s trousers?” To which Uthappa cleverly replied, “I wanted to take the attention away from you.” Mayanti chimed in with her trademark charm, “Today, our stylist had the conversation. Not yours and mine. Screenshot this, make this the meme now. But, brilliant observation, Sunny ji!”

But Gavaskar wasn’t just there for laughs. The former India captain also offered a strong and honest critique regarding Kolkata Knight Riders’ IPL 2024 victory under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy. While most of the applause and media attention went to KKR mentor Gautam Gambhir, Gavaskar pointed out that the actual leader on the field — Shreyas Iyer — didn’t receive the credit he deserved. “He didn’t get the credit for the IPL victory last season. All the plaudits were given to someone else. It’s the captain, who plays a major role in what’s happening in the middle and not someone sitting in the dugout,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

Iyer had a solid season in 2024, not just as a captain but as a batter too. He scored 351 runs in 14 innings at an average of 39, including two fifties, playing crucial roles in KKR’s campaign. Despite this, KKR released him ahead of the 2025 IPL mega auction, where he was picked up by Punjab Kings (PBKS).

Interestingly, under Iyer’s leadership, PBKS have been performing well this season and are close to securing a playoff berth — something the team hasn’t achieved since their runner-up finish in 2014. Gavaskar pointed out how, this year, the narrative has shifted. “See, this year he’s getting fair credit. No one is giving all the credit to Ricky Ponting,” he remarked, referencing the PBKS head coach.

Whether it’s meme-worthy humour or honest commentary, Sunil Gavaskar continues to be one of the most engaging and respected voices in cricket, blending wit with wisdom — a combination fans can’t get enough of.
