Novak Djokovic claims first clay win of season at Geneva Open

Novak Djokovic got back to winning ways on clay, easing past Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics 6-2, 6-3 on Wednesday to enter the quarter-finals of the 2025 Geneva Open. The straight-sets victory marked Djokovic’s first claycourt win of the season and first since capturing gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

After early exits in Monte Carlo and Madrid, the 24-time Grand Slam champion showed signs of his dominant self, wrapping up the match in just 75 minutes without facing a single break point. Djokovic commanded the baseline and frequently outmaneuvered Fucsovics with his precise groundstrokes and effective first serves.

“It’s great to break the ice in a way,” Djokovic said in his post-match interview. “We all know how tricky it is to play on clay. Today, I think my serve was my strongest shot, and that really helped.”

The 37-year-old Serbian, who turns 38 on Thursday, continues his quest for a 100th career ATP title at this ATP 250 event, which serves as a lead-up to Roland Garros.

This victory also comes just a week after Djokovic ended his six-month coaching stint with Andy Murray, confirming he will move forward without a coach for the time being.

Djokovic’s next test will be against Matteo Arnaldi, the rising Italian star who defeated Djokovic in Madrid last month. The clash offers Djokovic a chance at revenge and momentum heading into the French Open.

With his sights set on yet another Grand Slam run, this win could be the turning point Djokovic needed to reignite his clay season.
